Year 2005 is here

The year 2005 is here. There has been a lot that has happened in the year 2004. I wish I could make a chronology of what happened in the open source world in the past year. However I note with some satisfaction as to which way the software field is going to. There have been enormous number of Commercial Open Source Softwares released in year 2004 for bigger than mid-size segment.
My prediction for the year 2005 is that Application Service Provider Model would be the way to go. The competition would not compete on the basis of closed source but on ability to deliver solutions that work.
Two most important things for the ASP/Managed Solution providers to inspire trust would be.
1. Export/Import to standard CSV format for the databases would inspire trust in the customers. Exit Options ? Anyone
2. Ability to create interoperability standards using web-services.
( Yeah right! but I want to integrate my internal applications with your Application Services )
The technology stacks that seem to be favored ones for the ASP solutions are
LAMP distributions ( Yes lot of us have had it with current standard running Linux Distributions obsolete PHP+Apache+MySQL distros). PHP5+Apache2+MySQL 4.1.x+Perl 5.8.0 preconfigured to work together.
Jakarta Apache Linux Stack: This seems to be holding on its own against the onslaught of LAMP on the enterprise. In fact tomcat/mod_webapp+JDBC+MySQL with apache seems to be as pervasive as the LAMP.

So we have competing Open Source technology stacks for gaining the favor with ASP Model Solutions.

As an aside I am a Java (and Perl) Developer (development and deployment done on Linux) who spent the last week updating myself on the Jakarta Apache Linux Technology Stack during the work week and would be spending the weekend reading up on PHP/MySQL. Does that say something about which technology stack I am betting myself on.

Happy New Year
