Airtel Blackberry as a softmodem for your PC

To use Airtel blackberry as a softmodem. Follow the howto or here for linux using xmblackberry.
The modem initialization parameters for airtel are
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","airtelgprs.com" and the number to dial is *99# and no username and password is needed.
I am able to use ssh though there is high latency but haven't been able to use PPTP based VPN which runs on protocol 47(GRE) over IP directly, although I suspect an SSL based VPN might work.

Update:
Yes you need to install the Desktop Manager as well and make sure you can access your blackberry from the Desktop Manager.

Yesterday I spoke to airtel customer care and he told me that I can't use mobile office unlimited plan on blackberry devices and I have to use blackberry plans for the same. I am planning to use blackberry for internet and email.

Can anybody help me and let me know can I use mobile office unlimited plan 99rs in blackberry phone. I dont want to use this on my laptop.

Unfortunate airtel

Hi,
Unfortunately Airtel doesn't offer Mobile Office on Windows Mobile phones.
Strange but true. I had the same problem and I tried to fight too.. looks like it's their corporate decision.
I think they are worried about the feature of "Share internet" option available on the windows mobiles. that means even if you don't have the MO but if you have just airtel online /GPRS connection that's good enough to connect to the laptop.

all the best.

limitted connectivity

Hi tarun,

I have done all that was advised, am getting similiar results when i query my modem, and the connection is sucessfull.
However the connection icon in the connection trya shows, " limited connectivity"
Have used blackberry.net as APN

Mine works with 8320

I have posted how to on forums.crackberry.com

As Tarun mentioned, it should work straight forward. You need BB Desktop Software, pick up the standard modem installation, make that +CD..... entry, add a dial-up connection using this standard modem and you should be done.

If you do not have enterprise or basic 499 plan from Airtel / Vodafone, you need to get one. This modem only works if you have a constant GPRS or EDGE connection on your BB.

using BB as a modem

Hi Ankur,

1st of all u should have a data package enable for your mobile connection. If u have this the next step is fairly simple thanks to blackberry. Just download the latest desktop software. Once installed, it will give u an option of IP Modem. Click on tht and click on configure. In most cases it will take care of the settings. Once done click on connect and u r ready to go. If u still have trouble do email me with the error code u get.

Cheers,
Gagan

Blackberry with Bluetooth

Hi.. This is for folks who could not get Blackberry to work with Bluetooth.

First the problem:
Blackberry may not work with all of the blue tooth adapters new laptops have. The reason for this is as simple as: Blackberry Device Manager can only recognize Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator or as Generic Bluetooth Radio and NOT any other Toshiba, Dell or any other Bluetooth stack on your laptop.

Examples: Dell Vostro 1400, Dell 630's and above. IBM/Lenovo T43 or similar.

How to know what you have? Check under "Manage" of My Computer and check out under bluetooth.

You can find many of such description on Blackberry sites w.r.t your device and configurations.

Alternative?
Cheapest and fastest is to buy a Rs. 200/- worth generic USB Bluetooth dongle. Put it in your PC and restart your laptop couple of times. You should see it detect this device under the above category.

Else, you could install a driver (with the CD it came with) and uninstall its drivers and restart machine couple of time.

Once done, you should pair it with your blackberry. Make sure you add the blackberry device from your laptop instead of the other way.

Your Blackberry Device manager would pick this up and show in your "Connections". If not, re-install Device Manager and see it come up.

Once up, you can use it for Synchronization between both devices.

Adding the bluetooth modem is similar to mentioned here except that you need to pick up 'Standard Modem' on Bluetooth. However, the remaining settings continue to be the same.

Good luck. Let me know if you need anything.

vista connection

Hello,After much delibirations and efforts I am unable to connect my laptop with the blackberry, then I was given to understand that vista is not compatible with blackberry and does not support it as a modem.
I wish to know and understand that whether vista does support this endeavor of ours to connect blackberry as a dial up modem or should I switch to xp, though this would be de- generation.

Limited connectivity

Hello!

I did all that was advised, and finally was successful in connecting my BB to com4 as a modem,

however, when i click to connect, the modem dials and verifies the username and password and after that says that my laptop is connected to internet, i use windows Vista.

but in the notification area the internet connection has a yellow triangle and when the cursor is placed on it is says "limited connectivity"

and the laptop in not connected to the internet.

plz advise what next as i have a bb 8700g on airtel with an unlimited download.

Opera mini 4 on my blackbeery 8700g does not work

Hi Tarun, I have a blackberry 8700g on airtel with unlimitd plan. But after installing the same I get an error message saying "failed to connect". I did the setting under APN as "airtelgprs.com" but it still dodnot work. Please help. Thanks

I just talked to Airtel and

I just talked to Airtel and it seems that you have to get the Mobile Office plan in addition to the Blackberry plan. However, on a Blackberry device you cannot use Mobile Office. You can take the sim out and put it into a different GPRS enabled phone and use that as a modem. However, while in the Blackberry (8310 in my case) you can't get modem capability.

Is this anyone elses experience also?

Mobile Office plan on BB

Mobile Office plan on BB does not work nor do they provide you. Airtel and others think that you are using BB for emails primarily and internet access. Where as MO is primarily for non-BB's and phones that have capability to siphon internet traffic.

While technically it is possible, they sell it under Enterprise or Private use based on data transfer rates. So no use bothering yourself.

Get a basic plan of about 599/Mo. with Airtel / others and configure your modem accordingly.

You can have the BB work through wired or wireless (Bluetooth) as described above.

connection of net using blackberry

Hi,
I m trying to connect to internet using Blackberry,
But getting
Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated
I have even set the above initialization parameters but no progress

Can you please look into it
Thanks in Advance
Abhinandan

Hi Abhinandan

Blackberry forums link mentioned in the above article is a more appropriate forum for solving blackberry problems.
However my checklist(for windows only) when I get such errors
1. Check if your blackberry is on EDGE/GPRS network
2. Your blackberry device manager is running and is able to see the blackberry device.
3. Test your Desktop Manager to see if you can access the blackberry and back up data on it.
4. See if correct date/time is set on your blackberry device.
5. Test your "standard modem" to see if it responds to the modem command set (on windows you can use the device manager to "query modem" )
6. If all of the above conditions are met, reset your device by removing the battery and reboot your computer(especially if it is windows)
