Airtel GSM network borked in Pune(maybe Maharashtra)

Airtel GSM network for pre-paid network in Pune just stopped working about half an hour ago, without any warning of any sort. Don't know if it happened nationwide. Suddenly you hear first level support from airtel contact centers claiming 'server is down'. If the server is down get a redundant server online dudes. Airtel also happens to be most persistent SMS/Phone spammer around in India. Repeated calls asking them to stop sending un-solicited SMS'es are met on deaf ears. Didn't TRAI fail in its duty as a regulator in not fostering a free-market environment by not implementing number portability. As a side note I am an un-happy corporate Airtel Blackberry user. Extremely bad network policies, they not only use an HTTP proxy, the proxy for India is sitting far away at UK. TCP/IP doesn't work at all, so no ssh and Airtel customer support claims that the device can't operate as a modem for a PC ( probably because they want to sell datacards as a separate product ).

Update 13-OCT-2007:
TCP/IP works after specifying APN: airtelgprs.com and to use airtel blackberry as a soft-modem from your PC follow the links here
Recently the speeds on airtel blackberry have improved(maybe its better in Bengaluru) and are a bit more than a typical dial-up connection from BSNL but still not usable enough for VPN'ing to office.

Airtel service

I started using airtel as it was the best service almost 7 years i have been using the service but for the last 1 year onwards it has been sucking service...... now i'm planning to change the service as the service is pathetic .... call center people are useless....

And which provider do you plan to shift to ?

Slowly and steadily as the mobile operators have consolidated into effective oligopolies and grown their subscriber base to 100s of millions they have stopped worrying about individual subscriber problems. Anti-competitive marketplace distortion can only be fixed by good regulation and governance which is currently lacking in India and not about to change until we can elect a government answerable to us. Airtel is surely descending down to the level of their competition, its a race to the bottom for delivering poorer customer service amongst both public and private telecom operators in India.

Hi Airtel network is out

Hi

Airtel network is out here in pune kothrud area since yesterday (18/july 2008) till now. Airtel customer care no cannot be reached.

Hi Airtel Customer Care

Hi
Airtel Customer Care folks told that service will be steamlined by 10 AM 21st July2008. But it has not happened yet.

Nonsense talk by Airtel reps.

Tarun, you will find the Pune updates on my blog, plus what Airtel people had to say. These guys are slowly getting unprofessional in their dealings. Also I feel that Airtel is where Reliance was when it had just entered the Mobile telephony market, when it comes to operating(customer care, network, etc.). Reliance on the other hand is slowly but steadily improving.

Its the business as usual problem in India

Somehow the customer reps across all banking, telecom and all large organizations in India are afflicted by this need to lie. Its a part of chalta hai attitude. Nice blog you have.

I use Airtel Mobile Office,

I use Airtel Mobile Office, it has full TCP/IP support. I think compared to other GSM operators (HUTCH etc) in India, I find it the best option available.

They discourage Internet usage on PC through blackberry

I guess they are into discouraging the blackberry users from using Internet on PC using Blackberry as a modem.

it did it today again in my region.

I live in a remote talluk place in karnataka and use airtel prepaid connection. Today morning, the airtel network was completely out of order. There was no signal at all! It seems it took them about 6 hours to fix it.

airtel sucks man!
