There are about 10-20 times more SMS enabled devices available than PCs.
2. Why not use WAP ?
WAP is additionally charged feature for most mobile pricing plans and its not as pervasive as SMS.
3. What do I need to setup an SMS server ?

A GSM modem or a connection to another SMS operator( or a GSM operator) either of them would work with kannel.
