Spyware Sify ???

It is one thing to install yourself as the default homepage quite another to have an ISP dialer launch spamvertizing sites like Bharatmatrimony.com every now and then on a customer's PC. I noticed it on a friend's PC and I suspect its the ISP dialer software provided by Sify. Does it happen to other Sify users as well ?.
PS: Yes bharatmatrimony.com is a spammer site. Proof I pasted a matrimonial ad in a newspaper with my e-mail ID and along with zillions of Un-solicited mail from marriage bureaus and like I also got an e-mail from Bharatmatrimony.com inviting me join their service and I decided not to renew their subscription anymore as I don't intend to support spamming operations however big they grow or however much VC/PE money they raise.

This happens with me too and truely is an irritating thing. Sify Business itself will suffer. An example is that I've *stopped* advertising sify now (word of mouth) and even go to the extent of asking friends _to_try_ other ISPs.

It is so rude of you to

It is so rude of you to defame a well established service oriented portal like Bharatmatrimony. This shows how impatient you are with regard to internet advertisements. You mention here only Bharat matrimony being a spam. What have you cared about sites and mails that are actual spam? The maximum you do is just ignore them. I really question your authority, when you declare a statement against BM or any other portal for that matter. Beyond your assumption, that BM is a spammer site, it is established as one of the most popular marriage portals with a vision for societal welfare. Your decision of opting out of the site is never going to bring them down the ladder. They are reaching milestones(on a positive note0 on an every day basis. So, next time when you declare such a thing, think twice.

well established != clued about Internet e-mail best practices

Srikant,
Un-solicited commercial e-mail is just that, un-solicited more commonly known as spam. That I received UCE from Bharatmatrimony.com is enough for me to call them spammers. Doesn't matter whether they are involved in societal welfare or profit making. And yes by no means this is the only indian site which doesn't care about Internet e-mailing ethics in India, makemytrip.com hawking charitable organizations or hotel reservations to un-suspecting flight customers, Citibank trying to sell credit cards to their existing customers by phone spamming, airtel with their pre-recorded phone spam messages , abnamro bank with dozens of , social networks like desimartini trying to invite me by their own name or fictitious non-existent members who I don't happen to know, net4india trying to sell webspace, sify domains trying to sell .in domains, the list is endless. Examples of Un-solicited e-mailers/spamvertizers in the Indian web-world/real-world, and its not only the upstarts but also well established players. But that doesn't change the fact that all the communication I receive from them is against my wishes and un-solicited. Wikipedia entry on E-mail Spam mentions mainsleaze sent by main-stream businesses as opposed to fly-by-night viagra peddlers. Main-stream-ness of a company doesn't give them anymore right to spam my inbox without my permission.
